How to Remove Your Phone Number from Spam Lists

Apr 09, 2025

Why You Are Getting Spam Calls

If your phone rings constantly with unwanted calls, your number has likely ended up on one or more marketing and spam lists. This happens through a variety of channels — signing up for online services, entering sweepstakes, posting your number publicly, or even through data breaches. Once your number is in circulation, it gets bought, sold, and shared among telemarketers, robocallers, and sometimes scammers.

The good news is that you can take concrete steps to reduce these calls significantly.

Step 1: Register with the National Do Not Call Registry

The FTC\\'s National Do Not Call Registry is your first line of defense. Visit donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register. Once registered, legitimate telemarketers are required by law to stop calling you within 31 days.

Keep in mind that the registry does not stop all calls. Scammers, political organizations, charities, and survey companies are either exempt or simply ignore the list.

Step 2: Opt Out of Data Broker Sites

Data brokers collect and sell your personal information, including your phone number. To remove your information, you need to opt out individually from major brokers:

  • Spokeo — Visit their opt-out page and submit your listing URL.
  • WhitePages — Use their online suppression request form.
  • BeenVerified — Submit an opt-out request through their privacy center.
  • Intelius — Follow their opt-out process, which may require identity verification.
  • PeopleFinder — Request removal through their website.

This process is tedious but effective. Consider setting a calendar reminder to check these sites quarterly, as your information may reappear over time.

Step 3: Use Your Phone\\'s Built-In Spam Blocking

Both iPhone and Android devices offer built-in tools to filter spam calls:

  • iPhone — Enable \"Silence Unknown Callers\" in Settings > Phone. This sends calls from unknown numbers directly to voicemail.
  • Android — Turn on \"Filter spam calls\" in the Phone app settings. Google\\'s system identifies and blocks suspected spam automatically.

Step 4: Install a Call-Blocking App

Third-party apps provide an additional layer of protection by maintaining databases of known spam numbers. Popular options include Truecaller, Hiya, Nomorobo, and RoboKiller. These apps identify and block spam calls in real time before your phone even rings.

Step 5: Be Careful Where You Share Your Number

Prevention is the best long-term strategy. Going forward, protect your number by following these practices:

  • Read privacy policies before providing your number to any service.
  • Use a secondary number (like a Google Voice number) for online forms and sign-ups.
  • Uncheck boxes that grant permission to share your information with third parties.
  • Avoid posting your phone number publicly on social media or websites.

Step 6: Report Persistent Spam Callers

If you continue receiving unwanted calls after taking these steps, report them. File complaints with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FCC at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov. You can also use CallerInfo.net to look up and identify persistent spam callers, then report them to the appropriate authorities.

Removing your number from spam lists is not an overnight fix, but consistently applying these steps will dramatically reduce unwanted calls over time.
